Google has acquired 1,023 patents from IBM in an effort to shore up its claim on smartphone technologies, as companies would like to fight out their contentions in patent courts instead of on shop shelves.
Google’s Android open-source operating system is an object from rivals including Apple and Microsoft who might claim – and have claimed – that it puts on technologies built up or possessed by them.
