Following the devastating 8.9 magnitude that hit Japan on Friday, Hawaiians had to be alerted of an incoming tsunami wave. The alert siren woke up people during the night and urged them to seek higher ground to prepare for the arrival of the tidal wave.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Center, the first island hit by the wave was Kauai. The first 6-ft waves hit land minutes before 3 m, Japan time.
