Whole cantaloupes to three states included

The FDA says Jensen Foods has included in its recall whole cantaloupes it shipped to Indiana, Wisconsin and Louisiana. In an internal review of its shipment records, the Colorado farm identified shipments to those three states that have the potential to contain the Listeria contamination that has led to more than 70 illnesses and more than a dozen deaths. AFBF says direct payments musn’t be scrapped

The American Farm Bureau Federation board of directors says it does not agree with proposals to completely do away with direct payments. A paper released by AFBF Thursday says although direct payments should be scaled back, they do not believe they should be eliminated as part of the risk management tools that farmers use now.

Northern Wisconsin counties get disaster declaration

At the request of Governor Walker, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared agricultural disasters in Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, Florence, Forest, Iron, Oneida and Vilas counties.
The declaration stems from several periods of bad weather. In December and January, a freeze-thaw cycle caused frost heave that damaged root systems and left winter crops exposed to extreme cold with no protective snow cover. Nebraska farm income forecast up 35 percent

A new report says farm income in Nebraska will reach five-point-four billion dollars this year—up 35 percent from last year and 30 percent higher than the previous record set in 2008.

Twitter Revenue Projections: A Mixed Report

USDA’s weekly export inspections report shows corn above pre-report expectations, wheat within the anticipated range, and soybeans below all estimates. Corn and wheat inspections for the week ending September 22 were more than what’s needed weekly to meet USDA projections for the 2011/12 marketing year but soybeans fell short.

US tops Brazil in beef exports

A weaker US dollar and stronger Brazilian real recently made Brazilian beef slightly less competitive. According to Forbes magazine, Brazil’s beef exporters association, Abiec, shows Brazil exported 672,600 metric tons to world markets between January and July while US beef exporters shipped 741,300 metric tons. Abiec’s executive director says the US is regaining some market share because of price.
